After weaving, the fabric is slightly roughened on one or both sides. A layer of air remains in the space between the roughened fibers. This insulating layer retains the heat and ensures that flannel feels nice and soft and woolly. In addition, flannel is very light. It absorbs liquids, but also dries quickly. This ensures that the fabric breathes well and does not feel clammy and sweaty.
