The Ald Tour in Easterwierrum
Church tower and cemetery on the walled mound are a striking element in the otherwise flat surrounding landscape from afar. This is traditionally the old village center of Easterwierrum. Today the village center of this village is about 500 meters S of this. The 13th- or 14th-century Reformed Church of Easterwierrum on the Tsjerkebuorren mound was demolished in 1905 and succeeded by a church in the current center of Easterwierrum, leaving the tower and churchyard in the current hamlet orphaned.
In the tree-lined churchyard stands the large unarticulated 13th- or 14th-century brick tower (popularly called the Ald Toer = old tower), restored in 1589 by stone in the south wall, restored around 1950. In 1776 it was original gable roof replaced by a constricted spire. In the cemetery, among other things, 7 gravestones of the Vogelsang family, from the 16th and 17th century. In the tower 9 gravestones, 6 against the walls and 3 on the floor, some with sculptures, others with weapons. Bell chair with clock by G. van Wou and J. ter Steghe?, 1537, diam. 100,3 cm. Mechanical tower clock, 1911, later fitted with a synchronous motor. Clockwork: JY de Vries. The tower clock comes from Drogeham. The tower and the brick wall with a donkey's back and iron railings in the late 19th century form are national monuments.
