The Rat in IJlst
De Rat is an octagonal tower mill in IJlst and was built in 1828. Next to the windmill is the miller's house. De Rat is one of the three sawmills in Friesland. The others are De Jager in Woudsend and De Zwaluw in Birdaard.
The mill originates from the Zaan region and was built in 1683 as a sawmill. At the time he was called “De Walrot”, which meant “water rat”. From 1918, electrical sawing was carried out in the mill and the mill was stripped of its hood. Sawing was done commercially until 1950. The municipality saved the mill from demolition and restored it externally in 1968/1967, using parts from other mills.
In June 2008, the National Office for Archaeology, Cultural Landscape and Monuments made 126.514 euros available for a restoration of De Rat. Today, wood is sawn on a voluntary basis and the mill is open to visitors.
A residential area, Plan de Rat, is also named after this mill.
